Bulls Bulls Bulls

On Monday we traveled to the Museo de Arte Tradiciones y Populares, known to our group as the bull museum. My first thought was... although it is inhumane, I wouldn’t mind seeing what bull fights are about since I am in Peru. Come to find out bull fights are a summer event, but that didn’t stop me from researching why bull fighting is so important.

Peru may not be most famous for it’s bullfighting compared to other South American countries, but the tradition dates back to the 16th century when the spaniards first introduced the sport to the Americas. We saw the importance of this tradition by the many statues and paintings located at the museum. As significant as this tradition may be, I do not believe it will be around forever. There has been a big movement to discourage bullfighting by animal rights activist. It was interesting to learn that the Catholic Church has always supported bullfighting, but a recent movement shows Jesus being stabbed upon the cross with bullfighting swords (banderillas). I can’t decide if banning bull fighting would be a moral gain, or a cultural loss... most like a combination of the two.

Yesterday Michael, Joey, girl Miles, Kari, and I went surfing in Mira Flores. This was my first time surfing on waves with any size. I enjoyed it, but I am so out of shape. I never expected the pain that would come with paddling a surf board, but it was completely worth the experience and view. After the agonizing walk back to the rental tent, I was talking to some of the "surfer dudes" and began to wonder about there lifestyle. They all seem to move around to new things and better surf with no worries or restrictions in the world. Michael and I made the comment that they are living the life, but on second thought I would probably hate not having set plans or goals to work towards.

I am very excited about leaving for Cusco in the morning. I have enjoyed Lima, but this is the longest I have every been in a big city and will appreciate the change in scenery. I can't wait to compare life in Lima to life in Cusco, and then further to life in the villages. Everyone we have talked with have hyped up Cusco so I do have big expectations, but no matter how nice the town the crisp mountain air will be refreshing.
