When We Went to Plaza Mayor and other stuff

My favorite piece of modern art from the first museum

Above the main museum part of the first place we went to had a modern art museum. I'm not a huge fan of modern art because it's too block-y for my tastes, but I really liked this one. I like black and white pictures and paintings because they don't use color to make it a complex piece, instead they use lines, shapes and shading.
The Happy Man
I thought this picture was a little creepy because that is a crazy person smile. But on the mathematical side we see three and two repeated quite a lot. The man has three fingers on both his hands. The middle square is split three times and squares have four sides which is a multiple of two. There a three triangles split twice and triangles have three sides. The two bottom circles are split three times. The two Xs are split twice. The man has two eyes. He has eight square teeth, in two rows of four and eight and four are multiples of two. If I keep going we'll see that two is essentially repeated about 19 times and 3 is repeated about 10 times. This picture uses both linear lines and curved lines.
Men, Snakes, and Man-Bird Things
This is probably my favorite from the stairwell. There are four men in a box with snakes on top within a box all within another box. These shapes are reflected vertically across the painting. The coloring of the four men differ. The bottom one is red, the next is black with a red hat, the next is black with a red face, and the last is red with a black face. This coloring has rotational symmetry with the other four men. The snakes also have rotational symmetry in coloring. The man-birds on the bottom have transitional symmetry.

The Cathedral and Archbishop Palace weren't that interesting to me. The problem I have with a lot of religious art is that it's all essentially the same. The faces between person to person in the same painting, the subjects of the paintings are the basically repeated over and over, and after looking at about the first five paintings I felt like I've seen them all. I think the use of colors make them more interesting. The statues were pretty cool since they were all very extravagant. I also liked the Archbishops rooms with the colors of the room being colorful and the antique furniture were awesome.

After splitting up to find something to eat, we went down this strip of restaurants and we bombarded by people trying to get us to eat at their restaurant. It was a little surprising since it was the first time that's happened. The other places we've eaten at we just sort of wondered upon and no one was persuading us to eat there. It was a little overwhelming, but it worked out in the end. The food was delicious and came pretty quickly.

I learned that even knowing how to ask something in Spanish doesn't mean I'll understand the answer. Our waiter spoke English and trying to be considerate by speaking Spanish I asked "Donde esta el baño?" and he answered quickly in Spanish and I didn't even have an inkling of understanding to what he said. I found it in the end though. He was a really great guy. He told us he speaks Spanish, English, and a little bit of French because he wants to work on a cruise ship and needs to know at least two languages.

The thing I regret most is not packing sunscreen before coming to Peru. Third day in and I've been burned everyday and in the exact same spot. I'm going start doing that whole sunscreen thing. Except for that, it's been a good three days.
